Conwy Tunnel: Message for hauliers

North Wales Police are advising haulage companies and drivers of wide loads to avoid the Conwy tunnel due to the ongoing contraflow on the eastbound carriageway.

The westbound carriageway of the Conwy Tunnel remains closed following yesterday’s vehicle fire, due to ongoing detailed inspections and safety assessments.

The contraflow in the eastbound tunnel is allowing one lane of traffic in each direction – meaning restrictions of 3.2 metres.

Signage has been installed by the NWMTRA and the matrix signs along the A55 are illuminating messaging around the restrictions.

We can confirm that there are no police-escorted wide load movements taking place over the next few days, and North Wales Police are liaising directly with haulage companies.

Roads in pinch-point areas such as Llanrwst, Betws-y-Coed and Bethesda are being monitored by officers from North Wales Police’ Roads Crime Unit to ensure traffic is flowing freely. Anybody found not to be complying with the advice will be dealt with and may find themselves liable for prosecution.

A further Tactical Coordinating Meeting (TCG) meeting, chaired by North Wales Police, has been held this morning (Friday) involving partners from agencies including NWMTRA, emergency services, local authorities and Stena Line.

Motorists are advised to:

• Allow extra time for journeys
• Plan routes in advance and follow the latest traffic guidance
• Check Traffic Wales and their social media channels regularly for real-time updates.

With a busy and sunny weekend ahead, delays are expected, especially along the A55 and surrounding routes.

For your safety if you're caught in congestion:

• Stay in your vehicle unless it's unsafe to do so
• Keep your engine off if stationary for long periods
• If available, use air conditioning, or open windows, to keep your vehicle’s interior cool
• Keep hydrated—carry water if you're setting off on long journeys
