Operation to crack down on ASB in Wrexham after increased reports

An operation to crack down on anti-social behaviour is in place across Wrexham in response to an increasing number of incidents.

A group of up to 30 youths have been travelling from Wrexham city to areas of Ponciau, Johnstown, and Rhos, where under-age drinking, criminal damage, shoplifting, intimidation, and disorder have been reported.

Last weekend, officers stopped several youths as part of the operation, before a handful were dispersed from a bus stop in the Rhos are.

One youth who was persistently causing a nuisance in the area was issued with a full community protection notice - a tool to address anti-social behaviour that negatively affects the community's quality of life.

The operation was initially launched in both areas of Wrexham last October following a number of anti-social incidents of a similar nature.

Wrexham Rural Inspector Stefan Lederle and Wrexham City Inspector Heidi Stokes are aware of the growing concerns within the community and have come together in a bid to tackle the issues, deter crime and reassure residents.

Inspector Lederle also recently met with local councillors and partner agencies to discuss people’s concerns, and what action would be taken locally.

“Increased and visible foot patrols will be in place across all hotspot areas, in addition to plain clothed patrols, with support from youth offending teams to engage with youths in the area,” Inspector Lederle said.

“Officers will also be travelling on some bus routes for reassurance and to deter incidents, following reports of youths intimidating drivers.

“Advice and support have been offered to convenience stores that have previously been targeted to better protect them from further incidents, and dispersal orders have also been authorised to give officers the power to direct anybody engaging in anti-social behaviour to leave the area and not to return.

He added: “All incidents of anti-social behaviour will be dealt with robustly and identification of any individuals involved in incidents will be passed on for further action to be taken.

“Tackling this issue, and understanding concerns locally is a priority, which is why we are working hard every day to address the matter.

“I would encourage anyone who has witnessed anti-social behaviour in their community to report it to us so that we can take action where necessary.

“We take all reports very seriously; it is unacceptable in our communities and won’t be tolerated.

“I would also urge parents to ensure they know where their children are, and what they are up to.”
