A 24-year-old man has been jailed after attacking a shopkeeper in Caernarfon.
Mark Anthony Jones, of Maesincla Lane, Caernarfon, appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court on January 24th after admitting to a racially aggravated assault and intentional strangulation.
On August 2nd 2024, Jones was in a shop on Bridge Street in Caernarfon when he began to shout racial slurs at the shopkeeper saying “go back to your own country” and “I’ll kill you”.
Jones then attacked the shopkeeper who asked him to leave, grabbing him and strangling him before a member of the public intervened.
Jones ran away before police arrived but was shortly located nearby.
He was jailed for two years and four months.
He also received a restraining order to protect the victim lasting for 10 years.
Temporary District Inspector Andy Davies said: “Jones’ behaviour towards a shopkeeper just trying to do his job was appalling and unacceptable.
“This incident was terrifying for the victim and it is fortunate that there were others around to come to his assistance.
“We will robustly deal with incident of hate crime, and I truly hope that Jones reflects on his disgusting behaviour.”
