Disqualified driver jailed for offences in Wrexham

A disqualified driver who drove dangerously and at excess speed to avoid police has been jailed and issued with a three-year driving disqualification.

At about 6pm on Monday November 25, PC Ryan Taylor of the Roads Crime Unit was on patrol in the New Broughton area of Wrexham when he identified Matthew David Mills, who he knew to be disqualified, behind the wheel of a black Audi A3.

28-year-old Mills of Church View, Chirk saw the officer and continued to make his way into Wrexham city centre and drove at speed as he was making off from the police vehicle.

Mills overtook several vehicles on Stansty Road before making his way back to Old Mold Road in Gwersyllt whilst driving at excess speed. He then made his way towards Summerhill, again driving at excess speed and narrowly missing two other vehicles. He then turned left onto Poolmouth Road before sightings were lost.

Mills was eventually caught and pleaded guilty to several driving offences including driving whilst disqualified, dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

He appeared before court in Wrexham last month and was sentenced to nine months in prison, was disqualified from driving for three years with a requirement for an extended re-test and has to pay £272 in costs.

PC Ryan Taylor of the Roads Crime Unit said: “Mills is a habitual disqualified driver and repeat offender. He knew he shouldn’t have been behind the wheel that day, and in his attempt to drive away he placed numerous members of the public at risk with his excessive speeds and dangerous overtakes during the pursuit around the Wrexham area.

“Driving whilst already disqualified showed a real contempt for the authorities. His selfish, dangerous and irresponsible actions have been highlighted to the court and he can now contemplate about his behaviour whilst behind bars.

“Those who are banned from driving are banned for good reason, and we will always do all that we can to make sure those who feel the rules do not apply to them are brought to account.

PC Taylor added: “Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads remains a priority for North Wales Police and we will continue to do all that we can to remove dangerous drivers from the roads.”
