PCSOs complete first training programme in British Sign Language

A PCSO who recently completed a course in British Sign Language (BSL) speaks about how he is benefitting from his new skills.
Ten police officers and staff took part in a five-week course between March 11th and April 8th resulting in them achieving a level one qualification in BSL.
PCSO Jack Mitchelmore has already taken the opportunity to use his new skills in the community, he said: “As a PCSO, I need to build strong relationships and engage with all members of the community.
“This course has given me the confidence to better communicate with and support those in the deaf community too.”
On finishing the course, the staff and officers were presented with badges to wear when they are working to show they are BSL trained.
Jack continued: “I have already put what I’ve learned into practice on two occasions whilst on foot patrol.
“Firstly, signing with a parent and their child and then again with a family from Birmingham visiting Llanberis with their deaf son.
“On both occasions the families were pleasantly surprised at my basic knowledge of the language and encouraged me to continue with my learning.
“Being able to have even a basic conversation makes a huge difference in making someone feel heard and understood.”
The course was run in partnership with Grwp Llandrillo Menai, whose expert BSL tutors developed a course specifically designed for policing scenarios, ensuring officers gain skills that can be used in their daily roles.
“I would say a big thank you to David and Abi from Grwp Llandrillo Menai for making the course so enjoyable for me and my colleagues.
“I’m looking forward to using my new skills again soon to further develop my knowledge and understanding of BSL.”
Following the success of the initial course, further BSL courses will now be rolled out in coming months to further benefit members of the deaf community across North Wales.
