“I’m PC Mike Williams, currently based at Rhyl Police Station. I’ve been a Police Officer for four and a half years, starting in the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) in Cumbria before moving to North Wales Police where I’ve been for the past two years.
Although my role in the CNC was armed policing, it was very site based and more of a security role. I always wanted to do general policing and be able to investigate a variety of crimes and learn the basics of policing. I wanted to interact with the public as much as I could so I thought response policing would be a great way to combine both my desires of serving the public and investigating a variety of crimes.
One of the major highlights has to be a particular job I attended, where I was first on scene to a potential burglary. I cleared the building and conducted CCTV enquiries, then liaised with colleagues who have collated the CCTV and completed the case file resulting in the offenders appearing before the court.
I enjoy response policing because of the variety of jobs that come in and how dynamic it can be when things get busy. It is the most important role I believe as it’s what the public see, who they speak to and in many cases, their first impression of the police. A prompt and effective start from response officers can make or break an investigation in my eyes.
Like everywhere there are staffing challenges and high demand, but we always try to provide the best service we can to the public.
I also play rugby for the force and have been lucky enough to represent both Wales Police and Great Britain Police, I feel incredibly lucky in being able to travel and represent my country in a sport I love and also to be doing that as a serving officer.
Response policing provides you with an insight into all sorts of crime (and other things) and I believe it forms a good basis for anyone and allows officers to work on things that they have an interest in as well as keeping the variety of crimes to investigate.”
