Response Policing Week – PC Llinos Hughes

Response Policing Week is a great opportunity for us to share with you some stories from our front-line officers about their careers and what they get up to. First up we have PC Llinos Hughes based at Ruthin Police station:

“I’ve been a Police Officer for 10 and a half years and have been on response throughout my career, apart from a period I was on restricted duties after being violently assaulted in 2019.

I began my career in the Force Control Centre, then joined as a PCSO. To me it was a natural progression to then join as a Police Officer. I love response, it’s the bread and butter of policing.  I love the variety of incidents we attend and being able to meet new people every day.

I love to think I can make a difference to someone; I know it may sound cheesy but it’s true. I may be meeting someone in their darkest hour when they need assistance, and I always deal with victims the way I would want to be dealt with or how I would want a member of my family to be treated.

In 2017, I was speaking to a child who was a victim of rape when she became unconscious.  I performed CPR and thankfully she pulled through. It was an emotional experience that will stay with me for a long time.

Recently, I attended an aggravated burglary. The family were asleep in their home when it was totally ransacked. They had never had any dealings with the police in the past, so I made sure to fully support them throughout the investigation. I kept in touch with them for a long time and they were so appreciative. I really felt like I made a difference to their lives following a traumatic experience.

You are part of a family when you work on response. We work so closely with our rota colleagues, it’s important that you can trust them and work as a team.

The most challenging thing is juggling the jobs that we have to go to with minimal staffing. The number of different incidents we respond to can be a roller coaster sometimes.  Working in a rural area you must always think about how far away your back up is and police things in a smarter way.

You read some negative opinions about the job at the moment, but I think it’s about what you make of it. I think it’s the most rewarding role.”
