Appeal after report of wild bird shot in Holt

We are appealing for information after it is reported a wild bird was shot near to the River Dee in Holt.

The incident, believed to have involved an air rifle, happened at around 2pm on Sunday, February 4th.

A member of the public walking in the area at the time reported hearing a shot before seeing a bird, believed to have been a duck, in distress.

After hearing a second shot being fired, it is reported the bird stopped moving and began floating down the river.

PC Chris James of the Rural Crime Team said: “Two youths were seen in the area at the time of the incident. If you were in the area and saw them, or know who they might be, please let us know.

“It is of course an offence to have an air weapon in a public place without a reasonable excuse, and to intentionally to kill or injure any wild bird under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.

“This type of wildlife offence could result in up to 6 months imprisonment, an unlimited fine – or even both.

“Following this incident, we will be increasing patrols in this area.
