Last year, primary school pupils across North Wales were set a challenge to create an internet safety poster with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes for their schools. North Wales Police’s SchoolBeat programme, the Cyber Crime Team and PACT (Police and Community Trust) launched this initiative with the aim of raising awareness of how to stay safe online due to the sharp increase in the time spent online by youngsters since the Covid began and the many associated issues and risks.

The competition was a fantastic success with an amazing 578 entries being sent in. The selected three winners won £300 for their school and a Llechwedd family voucher. The panel also chose runners-up for each area who each won £150 for their school, together with a personal prize thanks to Llechwedd Slate Mountain.

This March, we’re launching the competition again with the aim of educating children on how to stay safe online as well as having the opportunity to get creative and be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes for themselves and for their schools. We hope that the competition will again stimulate the minds and imaginations of pupils and possibly parents, requiring them to research and learn about the best ways of using the internet safely.

The Challenge:

The competition will require pupils across North Wales to design a poster or graphic highlighting the most important internet safety messages. It can be hand drawn or digital – be as creative as you like! The safe and competent use of the internet is a vital tool in the development of our young people, and the internet is also going to be increasingly used during their education. Our youngsters are our future and North Wales Police are committed to ensuring that they are safeguarded.

Ideas to Consider:

  • Don’t give out personal information online
  • Report unwanted contact from strangers to a trusted adult
  • Settings should be changed to private or ‘Friends & Family’
  • Create strong passwords which are not shared with anyone but parents
  • Tell a trusted adult about online anti-social behaviour and cyberbullying
  • Be kind online!
  • Pupils are also encouraged to research websites such as the NSPCC and SchoolBeat to get advice or look at the NWP Cyber Crime Facebook page for tips and advice.

Prizes:

  • Signed Ball by Welsh squad – FAW of Wales
  • Scarlets Family Ticket to Parc y Scarlets
  • 6 x Family Bounce Below tickets
  • 3 Family Season Tickets plus mascot experience - North Wales Crusaders (Winners)
