The High Sheriff of Clwyd’s Annual Community Awards resumed again this year after two years away due to Covid restrictions.
High Sheriff, Steve Thomas, welcomed winners and invited guests to the Wings Club at Airbus in Broughton to celebrate the success of volunteers and voluntary groups across Clwyd.
Nominations for a High Sheriff Award had been received from County Voluntary Services in Conwy, Denbighshire, Wrexham and Flintshire. There were many fantastic examples of how people throughout Clwyd had stepped up to volunteer in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, including delivering meals to older or vulnerable people, addressing isolation and the important role that the volunteers played as part of the vaccination roll out.
High Sheriff Steve Thomas told the audience at the Awards: “Volunteers make a huge difference to our communities and I am honoured to have the opportunity to recognise everyone this evening”
The High Sheriff gave special thanks to Ann Woods, Chief Officer Flintshire Local Voluntary Council and her team who helped organise this year’s Awards. Ann told us: “Once again it was a delight for us to be part of the High Sheriff Community Award Ceremony. Recognising the time given by individuals and groups to help others is time well spent. My thanks to everyone who nominated individuals and groups and to those who attended the event.”
You can find details of the county winners below together with winners of the High Sheriffs’ Special Awards for outstanding community service.
Another highlight of the evening was the award to the Crimebeat Project of the Year. Each year the High Sheriff decides on the winner of this award from the many youth projects that have received Crimebeat funding over the past year. Crimebeat is the charity of the High Sheriffs and provides funding to support young people’s projects across Clwyd.
This year the award went to pupils of Ysgol Estyn in Hope, Flintshire. Over the past twelve months pupils from the school worked with project leader Angela Done and Headteacher, Gareth Jones, to create a relaxation and mindfulness garden on school grounds to help them through the difficult times that we have all been through. High Sheriff, Steve Thomas, visited the school last year and was extremely impressed with their work and enthusiasm and was delighted to present them with their award.
The High Sheriff also presented his Personal Awards to individuals and organisation he has met during his year in office including High Sheriff’s Volunteer Police Cadets, Jaydon Parry and Jack Taylor.
The Awards concluded with the presentation of walkie-talkie communication radios to the Volunteer Police Cadets who helped to meet and greet guests attending the awards. Earlier in the year Crimebeat made a grant to fund the purchase of the radios and the awards evening provided an opportunity for the High Sheriff to present the radios to the Cadets assisted by Chief Constable Carl Foulkes and Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin in front of the invited guests and award winners.
