Players at Wrexham Town Police Station FC are gearing up for a congested fixture schedule following their latest friendly match
The police side played the fundraising team from Hospice Of The Good Shepherd at the weekend, a closely-contested encounter that ended in a 2-2 draw.
Since that match, the officers’ fourth since forming earlier this year, interest has swelled from local sides keen to take them on.
Sgt Dave Smith said: “We’ve been inundated with requests from interested clubs who want to arrange a game.
“We’re still finalising the details for some of these games, but It feels like there are lots of exciting fixtures on the horizon.
“That’s fantastic from our point of view. It allows us to get our message out there to even more people and to form better relationships with the wider community.
“That was the aim right from the start of this initiative – to break down barriers and build bridges between serving officers and the communities we serve.
“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved so far with this community engagement initiative and long may it continue.”
Bridge The Gap FC are the team’s next opponents, a church-based organisation who strive to create footballing communities which can change lives.
Targeted primarily at men aged between 18-30, Bridge the Gap work to provide a welcoming environment to counter the effects of social isolation.
With its work underpinned by three central tenets; community, leadership and transformation; the organisation also offers members the opportunity to discuss issues around mental health and addiction.
Sgt Smith added: “As with all the sides we’ve played so far, the values that underpin Bridge The Gap’s work are so worthwhile.
“They’re community focused and work hard to make a positive difference to people’s lives through football and other activities.
“We’re delighted to have them lined up for the next friendly and I’m sure they’ll put out a very good side.”
Wrexham Town Police Station FC are looking for a venue within Wrexham to host home games over the summer months.
Their next fixture is set to be played on Saturday, 23 April with a location still to be confirmed.
